A league championship season won’t end with a trip to the state tournament for the Durango High School volleyball team.
Seeded ninth, one place out of being able to host a Class 4A regional, the Demons went on the road to face Thomas Jefferson and Discovery Canyon in the 4A Region 8 tournament Saturday in Colorado Springs.
No. 9 DHS would lose both matches to see its season end with a 10-5 overall record after going 7-1 in the 5A/4A Southwestern League to win the league title for the first time since 2011. The Demons finished the year on a three-game losing streak and lost five of their final seven matches.
No. 8 Discovery Canyon, the regional host, would beat No. 17 Thomas Jefferson 3-0 to advance out of the group and into the eight-team state tournament.
DHS took one set from each opponent Saturday, losing 3-1 in both matches. Set scores for the loss to Thomas Jefferson were not available.
Discovery Canyon beat the Demons 25-14, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14. Paityn Kramer led the winning team with 17 kills, while Rachel Clawson had 11 and Addyson McCarthur had 10.
The home team had nine aces in the match, led by Kiley West with four and McCarthur with another three. West dished out 44 assists.
DHS will lose six players to graduation going into next season.
