Tails and Tales summer learning program preview: For June and July, Pine River Library will host two months of animal-themed fun for their “Tails and Tales” Summer Learning Program. The program includes drop-in activities for families, craft programs for teens, live animal visits and a beginning fly-fishing class. All events will be held outside with proper safety measures. The library will also host a “Mammal Madness” competition throughout the summer, with different animals battling it out each week and participants filling out their brackets along the way. Participants get an entry to the drawings for every activity they complete, including completing take-and-make kits or attending a program, committing an act of kindness, doing the StoryWalk and reading a book. Take-and-make kits: Microgardens. Start a windowsill sprout garden with four different kinds of seeds, recycled egg carton planters, soil and labeling sticks.

“Program in a Bag” kits: Pick up a free “Program in a Bag” kit. The “Grow a Flower Garden” and “Grow a Vegetable Garden” kits include seeds and general tips for starting a vegetable garden. The “Ditch the Single Use Plastics” kit includes instructions and tips, with a metal straw, wax paper sandwich bags and a set of bamboo cutlery.

One Book, One Community Read Program: Schools, families and the community will read Katherine Applegate’s 2013 Newbery Medal-winning book, “The One and Only Ivan.” The goal is to teach parents and adults to engage thinking strategies in children by reading aloud together, cultivating a lifelong love of books. Each family will receive the book, as well as these local organizations: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H clubs, La Plata Youth Services, Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Funded by a $3,000 grant from the American Library Association: Libraries Transforming Communities.
