Two neurosurgeons have started work in Durango providing care to those with conditions such as herniated discs and carpal tunnel.
Dr. Dominic Cannella and Dr. Paul Davis began offering neurosurgical care last week at San Juan Health Partners Specialty Services on Florida Road.
Patients have been driving to San Juan Regional Medical Center to see the two physicians. The new clinic will allow physicians to provide many services for those with head injuries, and spinal and nerve problems in Durango.
“People have a tendency to make a better recovery if they are close to home and under familiar circumstances,” Cannella said, in a news release.
Patients in need of surgery will have to travel to the San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, but the specialists will be able to diagnose patents and care for them after surgery in Durango.
Some patients may be good candidates for minimally invasive or microscopic surgery on their spine. For example, the procedure could be used to remove a bone spur, Cannella said.
Patients who are experiencing difficulty walking, numbness in their arms or legs, or pain that radiates into the arms or legs may experience immediate relief from surgery, according to the release.
San Juan Health Partners Specialty Services is a division of the San Juan Regional Medical Center. It opened in June to provide cardiology and urology services in Durango. Previously, the clinic had operated in Bayfield.
The clinic expects to expand into pain management next, but Cannella could not say when.
San Juan Health Partners Specialty Services is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Neurosurgical services will be available on Wednesdays. The clinic can be reached at 444-0260.
